Ordering free powder coating samples – finishes & colour charts

With such a wide range of possible options, choosing a powder coating finish for a project can seem overwhelming. The information you need before you order your powder coating samples are:

Order powder coating sample panels to find the exact colour and finish you need

Powder coat sample panels are rectangular aluminium sheets.

  1. Colour – Manufacturers provide stock colour charts to guide designers and fabricators in their choices. Powder coating sample colours are available in all these stock shades, as well as the full range of RAL colours. Some manufacturers also provide colour matching services – they will colour match powder coating samples to pre-existing products or to a custom colour provided by you.
  2. Finish – As well as knowing the colour you wish to use, you also need to know the finish type. Whether you want gloss, satin, matt, ripple, metallic, sable, or textured, or simply to compare a colour in a range of different finishes, powder coat sample panels are available for all finishes.
  3. Application – Not all finishes and polymers are suitable for any application. For example, architectural powder coating uses heavy duty super-durable chemistries, and epoxy powders should not be used outside. Be aware of the limitations of your project before committing to a finish that is not possible for your requirements.

Powder coat sample panels use aluminium as their medium, but powder coating can be applied to any metal that can hold a charge. It can also be applied to wood and plastic. Powder coated aluminium samples are the industry standard.

How your project benefits from powder coat sample panels

Powder coating has made its name as an attractive, durable, tough, and environmentally friendly coating option, but what does it really look like? A colour that looks incredible on your computer screen may not be exactly what you were hoping for in the light of day. It is also a lot like the photograph on the box of a microwave dinner – results may vary, and what you see is not always what you get.  Ordering a powder coating sample panel means you can see the colour in any environment, assess the texture or special effect in different conditions, and actually feel what you are hoping to produce before you buy the powder.

It is also possible to order multiple custom, stock or RAL colour samples free of charge to be able to compare different options. The number of free samples is usually limited to 5-10 – for example 6 samples of Interpon powder coatings can be ordered at once. Real life examples of powder coating finishes

As with anything online, how it looks in the flesh is always different to what you see on the screen – this is why it is so important to order powder coat sample panels. But another way is to check out other projects that have used powder coating for their perfect finish. In the UK, architectural powder coating is incredibly popular and examples can be seen in many of our cities – Sage Gateshead in Manchester and the iconic Shard in London, just to name a few.

The Shard – Interpon powder coatings inside and out

The Shard uses Interpon powders inside and out.

The former London Bridge Tower, now known as the Shard or Shard of Glass in London is currently the tallest building in Western Europe, and the 5th tallest in whole Europe, with its 95 stories and nearly 310 metres. This skyscraper was coated with AkzoNobel’s Interpon powder coatings – the coating of choice was polyester powder coating (PPC), also known as super durable powder coating, which meets the British and international standards of super durable decorative coatings.

The exterior aluminium structures of the Shard are coated with Interpon D2525, for the D2000 products have the longest track record existing already for more than 20 years. Powder coatings also play a part in the interior of the Shard – the floors from 2 to 28 are offices which require durable ceilings that conceal cables and ventilation as well as hold sprinklers. This is where AkzoNobel powder coatings again come into the picture – An Interpon D1000 -product was chosen to coat the ceilings that are made of metal tiles. The D1000 series include coatings that are fire resistant.

Akzo Nobel powder coatings in IT products

It is not just architecture and exterior metal that can benefit from the high performance properties of powder coatings. HP use textured powder coating for the bottom case of their EliteBook laptops, Dell powder coat the frame and exterior of their Energy Smart Server Cabinet and the case of the Netgear Modem. These powder coatings are developed to be tough, smooth, and to bake at lower temperatures for their plastic substrates.

Set top boxes, mobile phone components and televisions can also be powder coated. The Sony Bravia television uses Interpon IT powder coating in black for the screen casing. This is from Interpon’s specialised IT range, designed to meet the requirements and specifications of the communication and technology sector.

Powder coating is an environmentally friendly alternative.

Interpon powder coatings as the eco-friendly choice

IKEA is known for their dedication to being environmentally conscious. It is no surprise then they are heavily invested in finding the most ‘green’ coating solution, and that has led to a huge amount of the IKEA range being power coated. Powder coating is solvent free and releases no VOCs, making it one of the most environmentally friendly coatings available.

IKEA partnered with Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings to apply their soft touch topcoat for interior furniture to their range of PAPAJA plant pots (pictured left). The collaboration included a variety of colours from the Interpon F1000 range, an epoxy/polyester blend in satin gloss. The soft touch technology makes the pots tactile, as well as being durable and appealing.
